Synthetic Mimicry (2022)

Electronics

Program Note

Synthetic Mimicry is a piece for four channel live mixing of audio generated from neural networks. There are four different neural networks that were trained on different source materials, including vocal samples, Bill Evans playing solo piano, Joao Gilberto's singing and guitar, and my own big band music. The point was not to recreate what the original sounds were, but to explore the new sonorities found within this abstraction of what was once human. However the human element is not lost, as through exploration and live mixing an organic sense of structure is preserved.
